Learn Code

The Hard Way

This project was a very short one. I was commissioned by Zac Halbert to help illustrate some characters for his redesign of Zed Shaw's IP, Learn Code The Hard Way.

Zac had already landed on some great preliminary sketches and concepts for most of the characters so I was able to jump directly into creating high fidelity illustrations.

So, the first things I did when transitioning the concepts into illustrations was pull out all of the great colors used in the site's components.

All of the illustrations were aligned pretty tightly to a grid. I broke outside of the grid at times in order to achieve more personality in the characters. You can see instances of this in some of the positioning of limbs and mouths of the characters.

The grid insured that I was able to achieve consistency between characters, but not be a #gridslave.
